Worklayer MCP server

In short

The Worklayer MCP server connects Worklayer to AI tools that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP): Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and others. You sign in with your Worklayer account, and your AI tool can look up people, time off, tasks, approvals, expenses and analytics, and act on them with exactly the permissions you have in Worklayer. It's included in every plan, including the free plan.

Server URL

https://app.worklayer.ai/api/agents/connector/mcp

A remote server over Streamable HTTP. You sign in with OAuth; there's no API key.

Connect your AI tool

Add the server URL to your AI tool, then sign in with your Worklayer account in the browser window that opens. Each person connects with their own account.

Claude

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors. Choose Add, then Add custom connector, name it Worklayer, paste the server URL and sign in. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it first under Organization settings, then Connectors, and each member then connects with their own Worklayer account.

Claude Code

Run these two commands in your terminal. The second one opens the Worklayer sign-in.

claude mcp add --transport http worklayer https://app.worklayer.ai/api/agents/connector/mcp
claude mcp login worklayer

ChatGPT

Open Plugins in ChatGPT, choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Worklayer, paste the server URL, sign in and choose Create as a plugin. Whether you can add custom MCP servers depends on your ChatGPT plan and your workspace's settings.

Codex

Run these two commands in your terminal. The second one opens the Worklayer sign-in.

codex mcp add worklayer --url https://app.worklayer.ai/api/agents/connector/mcp
codex mcp login worklayer

Cursor

Add Worklayer to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or to .cursor/mcp.json in a project. Cursor asks you to sign in the first time it connects.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "worklayer": {
      "url": "https://app.worklayer.ai/api/agents/connector/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Run this in your terminal, or add the server with MCP: Add Server in the Command Palette. VS Code asks you to sign in the first time it starts the server.

code --add-mcp '{"name":"worklayer","type":"http","url":"https://app.worklayer.ai/api/agents/connector/mcp"}'

Other AI tools

Any MCP client that supports remote servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in can connect with the server URL.

What it can do

The server's tools cover six areas. Reading never changes anything; the tools that do are listed on the right.

AreaWhat it readsWhat it can change
People and orgEmployees, profiles, the org chart, departments, teams, workplaces, legal entities and cost centersRead only
Time offRequests, balances, who's away, leave types, work schedules, the time-off calendar and public holidaysRequest, change or cancel time off, after a check against the leave policy
TasksTasks, subtasks, comments and activityCreate and update tasks, add comments
ApprovalsYour approval queue and the approvals you can seeApprove or reject, with a reason for a rejection
ExpensesExpenses, summaries, categories and policiesSubmit, change or cancel expenses, after a preview of the exact amounts
AnalyticsHeadcount, turnover, absence and demographics, by department and over time (admins)Read only

There are no tools for payroll, payments or editing employee records.

What to ask

Ask in your own words. A few examples:

  • Who's away next week?
  • How many vacation days do I have left this year?
  • Request vacation for me from 22 to 24 December.
  • Show the approvals waiting for me.
  • Create a task to order a laptop for Monday's new hire and assign it to me.
  • How did headcount and turnover change by department this year?

Permissions and security

Your permissions, nothing more

Your AI tool acts as you. It sees and changes only what your role allows in Worklayer, exactly as in the app. Analytics are for admins.

Sign-in with OAuth

You sign in to Worklayer in your browser. Your AI tool receives a token, never your password, and needs no API key. To disconnect, remove Worklayer from your AI tool.

You confirm changes

Tools that change data are marked as such, so AI tools like Claude ask you before they run them.

Checked before it's saved

A time-off request is checked against the leave policy and existing absences first. An expense is previewed with the exact amounts, per diem and mileage before it's submitted.

Every call logged

Worklayer logs every tool call with the person and the tool.

Your AI provider

What a tool returns is sent to the AI tool you use and handled under that provider's terms.

Troubleshooting

The sign-in doesn't finish

Sign in with the account you use for Worklayer. If the window closes with an error, remove Worklayer from your AI tool, add it again and sign in.

A tool says you don't have access

The server applies your role in Worklayer. Ask an admin if you need more access. The analytics tools work for admins only.

You're asked to sign in again

Sign-ins expire after a while. Reconnect Worklayer in your AI tool, or run claude mcp login worklayer or codex mcp login worklayer.

Questions

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI tools use other apps. Worklayer's MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools a set of HR tools, so you can ask about time off, approvals or headcount and act on them without opening Worklayer.

Claude on the web, on desktop and in Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, and any other MCP client that supports remote servers with OAuth sign-in.

Yes. It's part of every plan, including the free plan for companies of up to 3 employees.

Only if you can. The server applies your role in Worklayer to every call, so an employee's AI tool sees what that employee sees in Worklayer, and an admin's sees what the admin sees.

Tools that change data are marked as such, and AI tools like Claude ask you before they run them. The server has no tools for payroll, payments or editing employee records.

No. You sign in with your Worklayer account, and each person connects with their own account.

The MCP server lets the AI tool you already use work with Worklayer while you chat. Worklayer's own agents run inside Worklayer, on a schedule or when something happens, within the permissions an admin grants. How Worklayer's agents work.
